Saints in Nicaragua: Thorns and Roses

Being on this trip has been a learning experience in that we have all stepped out of our comfort zones. I never knew I could sweat so much and for so long until this trip. We start working at 8:30 and end at 12:30. After our working portion of the day, we return to town to have a well prepared lunch before we set off for our next adventure. We have gone to a volcano, painted at a gallery, gone kayaking through a giant lake and now we are headed to a market place in Masaya. I feel fortunate to be able to go on a trip like this where I get to help a community as well as go to new places, but seeing some of these people I can see that many are trapped and they get few opportunities if any. Here I am, complaining about the heat and how much I'm sweating when there are so many people here that worry about where their next meal is coming from, just as many others do all over the world. We live lives that are full of opportunities and I am grateful for every one of them like this trip.

This trip has been a great experience so far, even though we have to deal with the heat, the bugs, and being sore from work. The best parts of this trip have been food and bonding with my classmates. The food and drinks for breakfast, lunch, and dinner have been outstandingly delicious. So much so that I eat left overs from the rest of the group. I look forward to every meal, especially lunch. After working on the Adobe bricks for several hours in the hot sun, the food makes me feel happy. The second highlight is particularly nice because spending time on or off the job is fun with my fellow classmates, even people who are not my closest friends. I have become closer to everyone on this trip and as I enjoy these times now I will also enjoy looking back on them as memories.

Thanks guys for sharing. You provide great insights on the impact of the trip and how you've grown. Congratulations on a job well done! (Sorry, I had a typo and had to re-post.)
